Liveliness — Is the Network Hoarding or Distributing?

From The Weekly BOLT ·

Over these past weeks we've assembled a complete on-chain toolkit — valuation metrics like MVRV and the Z-Score, behavioral metrics like SOPR and exchange flows, and holder-conviction metrics like HODL Waves and Reserve Risk. This week, with Bitcoin holding steady near $63,000 through a volatile macro stretch, we introduce a metric that elegantly captures the single most important question about the network's collective behavior: is Bitcoin, as a whole, in an accumulation phase or a distribution phase? That metric is Liveliness, and it offers a bird's-eye view of holder behavior that complements everything we've covered.

The Basics: Liveliness is built on the concept of "coin days." Every coin accumulates one "coin day" for each day it sits unspent in a wallet — so a coin held for 100 days has accumulated 100 coin days. When a coin is finally spent, it "destroys" all the coin days it had accumulated. Liveliness is the ratio of the total coin days destroyed to the total coin days ever created. The result is a number between 0 and 1 that captures the balance between spending and holding across the entire network:

Liveliness = (Cumulative Coin Days Destroyed) ÷ (Cumulative Coin Days Created)

When Liveliness is rising, it means old coins are moving — long-term holders are spending and distributing, destroying their accumulated coin days faster than new ones are created. When Liveliness is falling, it means coins are increasingly sitting still — the network is hoarding, with holding behavior dominating spending. It's a single, clean gauge of the tug-of-war between accumulation and distribution across all of Bitcoin's holders.

Why It Matters: Liveliness is powerful because it filters out the noise of short-term trading and reveals the underlying behavior of the network's core. Rising Liveliness has historically accompanied bull-market tops and distribution phases, when long-dormant coins wake up and their holders sell into strength — the "old money" cashing out. Falling or flat Liveliness, by contrast, characterizes accumulation phases and bear-market bottoms, when coins go dormant, holders refuse to sell, and supply is quietly locked away by conviction-driven investors. Because it's built from the entire history of the blockchain, Liveliness is difficult to manipulate and provides a genuinely macro-level read on whether Bitcoin's holder base, in aggregate, is in a hoarding or a distributing mood. For a long-term investor trying to gauge where we are in the cycle, that's invaluable information.
