NUPL — Reading the Market's Emotional State On-Chain
From The Weekly BOLT ·
The past two weeks we covered MVRV (market value versus realized value) and SOPR (whether moved coins are sold at profit or loss). This week, with the Fear & Greed Index at 22 and Bitcoin in a genuine drawdown, we look at the on-chain metric purpose-built for exactly this moment: NUPL — Net Unrealized Profit/Loss. It rests on the same realized-price foundation as MVRV and SOPR, but it's the one that most directly maps to market psychology, which makes it especially useful when sentiment is breaking.
The Basics: NUPL measures the total unrealized profit or loss across the entire Bitcoin network as a share of market cap. The formula is straightforward:
NUPL = (Market Cap − Realized Cap) ÷ Market Cap
Recall that Realized Cap values every coin at the price it last moved — the network's aggregate cost basis. Market Cap values every coin at today's price. When Market Cap sits well above Realized Cap, the network as a whole is holding large unrealized gains and NUPL is high. When the two converge, NUPL approaches zero — the average holder is roughly at break-even. When Market Cap falls below Realized Cap, NUPL goes negative — the network is, in aggregate, underwater.
Why It Matters: NUPL is valuable because it translates cleanly into emotional zones that have historically marked cycle phases. Analysts typically divide it into bands. Above 0.75 is "Euphoria/Greed" — rare, and historically a cycle-top warning. Between 0.5 and 0.75 is "Belief." Between 0.25 and 0.5 is "Optimism." Between 0 and 0.25 is "Hope/Fear" — the anxious zone where the average holder still has a small gain but conviction is wobbling. And below 0 is "Capitulation" — the network is underwater, holders are in pain, and this band has historically marked durable cycle bottoms. The power of NUPL is that it doesn't ask what price is; it asks how much profit or loss the average participant is sitting on, which is what actually drives whether they panic-sell or hold.
